The Future Of Content Isn’t SEO. It’s AEO.
A practical playbook for winning inside AI engines, not just search results
You have probably noticed it already. Search is changing. More people ask questions directly inside AI chat tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Copilot, and they get complete answers without ever clicking to a website.
At INBOUND, Aja Frost and David Hunt put language to the shift. It is no longer just about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). It is now about AEO, which means Answers Engine Optimization. In simple terms, it is the practice of making sure your brand shows up inside AI generated answers, not only in Google’s search results.
Here is the reality we are building for:
- LLMs, or Large Language Models, and chat traffic are projected to overtake organic search by 2028.
- HubSpot expects a 25.6 percent lift in traffic by leaning into AEO.
- Sixty percent of Google searches now end with zero clicks.
- Traffic from LLMs converts three times better, with faster cycles and higher value.
That sounds big. It is. It does not mean content is dead. It means we change how we package it.
What AEO Actually Means
AEO stands for Answers Engine Optimization. It is how you increase your brand’s visibility inside AI models and answer experiences. If a buyer asks a question in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Copilot, your best chance is to have the right answer, packaged in a way that models can reliably identify, quote, and trust.
The Write-First Framework
This is the structure the sessions emphasized and what we use at Howl when we adapt long-form content for answer surfaces:
- Answer first in the opening paragraph: Say the exact answer in 2 to 4 sentences. Use the same words the question uses.
- Then go deeper: Add context, nuance, and use cases. Keep paragraphs short. Break ideas into sections.
- Reference your own data: Pull insights from your CRM (Customer Relationship Management system), campaigns, interviews, and support tickets. Models reward unique, attributable information. Quote it. Name the source.
- Add a scannable FAQ at the bottom: One question. One answer. Keep each answer self-contained. If a model grabs a single answer, it should still make sense.
- Format for machines and humans:Use clear H2s and H3s, which are header tags in website content that help both readers and AI models scan and understand structure. Bullets. Short tables. Each section should stand on its own.
- Tie each point back to your product: Do not hard sell. Show the “why this matters” and “how we help.” It gives models a reason to associate your brand with the solution.
Simple test: can a single paragraph or a single FAQ entry travel on its own and still be accurate, helpful, and brand-aligned?
Off-Site Authority That Models Notice
You do not only win on your site. You win where models already look.
- Identify the sources AI already cites in your niche. Find the top 10 domains that frequently appear in AI responses for your core queries.
- Secure brand mentions there. Guest posts, contributed quotes, data shares, or research partnerships. Position the brand the way you want it described.
- Leverage social proof. External validation that builds trust, like case studies, client stories, third-party awards, and credible reviews.
- Use human-first channels. Podcasts, events, and community. Models ingest these signals when they are transcribed, summarized, and syndicated.
AEO In Practice: One Topic, Many Entry Points
Pick a single question you know buyers ask. For example: “How do we measure ROI from events in an AI-first world?”
- Publish the answer-first article on your site.
- Add a 5-question FAQ at the bottom.
- Create a 1-page data note with your own metrics.
- Offer a checklist for first-time event attribution inside your CRM.
- Event attribution means tracking the impact of events on revenue or leads, often using HubSpot or another marketing platform.
- Pitch a contributed quote to a source models already cite.
- Share a short video that summarizes the answer. Avatars and tools like HeyGen, are optional. Clarity comes first.
- HeyGen is an AI video creation tool that generates avatars and voiceovers
Every piece reinforces the same point. Every piece can stand alone.
The AEO Checklist
- Exact question in the H1.
- Exact answer in the first paragraph.
- Clear headers and bullets.
- Original data and quotes.
- Bottom-section FAQ.
- Internal links to your product and proof.
- At least one off-site placement on a trusted domain.
What Changes On Your Website This Quarter
- Convert your top 5 SEO posts into answer-first AEO posts.
- Add FAQs to your 10 highest intent pages.
- Build one original data asset per quarter. Tie it to your CRM.
- Create a “sources we trust” outreach list and secure three brand mentions.
- Pilot one bite-size table per article. Models love neat structure.
How Howl Can Help
This is the work we do every week. We help you identify the questions that matter, build answer-first content, and earn the off-site signals that models trust. If you want support, book 30 minutes and we will map your AEO pilot around one revenue goal.
